Glacier runoff surges, rainfall rises, snowmelt declines: Tibetan Plateau streamflow shifts.
The researchers studied how rainfall runoff and melt water have changed in two Tibetan Plateau basins from 1963 to 2012. They used a hydrological model to analyze the impact of climate change on streamflow. The results show that glacier runoff has increased significantly, especially in the 2000s, while snowmelt runoff has decreased. Rainfall runoff has been increasing, driving the overall rise in total runoff. Glacier runoff plays a big role in the increase of river discharge, especially in the more glaciated basin. Snowmelt runoff has a smaller impact on total runoff changes.
