Groundwater study reveals potential connection between aquifers, impacting water quality.
Groundwater age tracers were used to study how water enters the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. Older water is found farther from streams and in areas where the water table is deeper. Most samples were modern or mixed in age. Some water in the aquifer is thousands of years old. Water from underlying aquifers may be flowing into the alluvial aquifer. Further research on water chemistry and geological data will help confirm this connection.
