Offshore wind shears in Southern New England impacting wind turbine energy output.
Vertical wind shears in Southern New England and along the East Coast of the United States were studied to understand their impact on wind turbine energy production. The researchers analyzed wind shear values using data from various sources and found that strong wind shears were often observed for South-Westerly winds in specific meteorological conditions. These large wind shear values were influenced by a high-pressure system over the North Atlantic and low pressures over land, causing warm winds to flow over cold waters. The power density calculated with wind shear considered was slightly lower than when only wind speed at a certain height was used.
