Cowpea germplasm study identifies valuable resources for future crop improvement.
Cowpea germplasm from western Maharashtra, India was studied to identify diversity and potential for crop improvement. The researchers used agro-morphological traits to characterize the cowpea accessions. They found that traits like determinate growth, straight pods, smooth seeds, elliptic shape, and yellowish-white seed color were dominant. The time for first flowering varied, pod length ranged widely, seeds per pod differed, and 100-seed weight showed a broad range. All traits were significantly different among the accessions, indicating valuable germplasm for future breeding programs.
