High heritability in tobacco traits could revolutionize crop yields.
The study looked at different traits in 84 types of tobacco plants to see how much of the differences were due to genetics. They found that traits like days to flowering, green leaf yield, and cured leaf yield were mostly influenced by genetics, while leaf area and number of leaves per plant were more affected by the environment. This means that certain traits in tobacco plants are more likely to be passed down from parent to offspring, while others are more influenced by the conditions they grow in.
