The article presents a new method to solve the Pre-Marshalling Problem at maritime container terminals. By using a combination of specific heuristics in a four-stage process, the researchers were able to significantly improve the quality of solutions found while generating fewer solutions overall. This deterministic approach outperformed the original random method, leading to more efficient operations at container terminals.
