New study reveals how biomass char can reduce harmful NO emissions
Biomass char was studied for reducing NO emissions by analyzing its structure. Different types of biomass chars were heated and then tested for NO reduction. The heat treatment changed the char structures significantly. The reactions with NO and O2 caused different structural changes in the char. New oxygen-containing groups were formed during both reactions. The reaction with NO could be blocked by oxygen surrounding the carbon molecules first. The performance of biomass char in reducing NO emissions depends on its structural features and how it changes during gasification with NO and O2.
