Deficit irrigation boosts water productivity, slashing costs for farmers worldwide
The scientists investigated how using less water for growing green peppers affects the price of water and the amount of crops produced. They studied different water levels on green peppers in a controlled greenhouse in Tehran. By using less water for irrigation (deficit irrigation) and adjusting the water amount, they found that the price of water reached its highest at 183.44×〖10〗^3 Rials per cubic Meter. With deficit irrigation and water optimization, they observed that water use efficiency was 5.67(kg/m³) and the economic productivity was 1.04. Interestingly, after tweaking the water depth, deficit irrigation actually improved how effectively water was used compared to giving the plants full water.
