Colombia's Economic Inequality Deepens Over Decades, Central Regions Thrive
Regional economic inequality in Colombia from 1926 to 2018 shows that different regions did not grow closer economically over time. Poorer regions grew faster, but the gap in per capita GDP between regions did not shrink. Early isolated markets in central Colombia and late integration of regions through transportation led to economic concentration in the center. Import substitution policies favored central industrial areas, leaving coastal regions behind. This history helps explain current economic disparities in Colombia.
