Stagnant food grain production in India threatens future food security.
Food security in India is closely tied to agricultural production. A study looked at data from 1988-2018 to understand trends. The net sown area decreased slightly, while the gross cropped area increased due to more land use for food demands. Production of food grains stayed stagnant but increased in the last decade, likely due to better farming practices. Cereal production area decreased, possibly due to weather or farmers switching to more profitable crops. However, productivity improved. India needs to increase cereal production by 4.2% annually to meet future demands, higher than the previous decade's growth rate.
