New winter wheat varieties show promise in combating drought conditions.
The researchers studied nine types of winter wheat to see how well they could handle drought conditions. They grew the wheat in a greenhouse and looked at traits like plant height, seed number, and grain yield. They found that all the wheat types produced less grain under drought stress compared to well-watered conditions. Some types of wheat, like 'Plainsman V.', 'GK Berény', 'PC61', and 'PC110', showed better tolerance to drought. Wheat with longer roots and more seeds tended to do better in drought conditions. Overall, the study helps breeders identify wheat varieties that can withstand drought better, which is important for ensuring good crop yields in changing climates.
