New sugarcane clone outperforms others in yield and quality traits.
A study evaluated 20 different types of sugarcane plants in Egypt over two growing seasons to see which ones produced the most sugar. They found that some plants were better at producing cane, while others were better at producing sugar. One plant, G.2017-68, stood out for its high cane yield. Another plant, G.2017-30, had the highest sugar yield per area. The size of the cane, number of stalks, and height of the plant were the most important factors for predicting how much cane could be harvested. The researchers suggest that selecting the best plants early on in the growing process can help improve the development of new sugarcane varieties.
