Biofuel Breakthrough: Yeast Combo Produces Record-Breaking Ethanol Yields from Sugars
Yeast strains were tested for making ethanol from sugars in a bioreactor. S. cerevisiae was best at producing ethanol and biomass from glucose, while C.kefyr-T and C.kefyr-S were better with galactose. A mix of S. cerevisiae and C.kefyr-T produced the most ethanol from a 10% sugar mix. A mix of C.kefyr-T and C.kefyr-S produced the most ethanol from 8% synthetic lactose. Using all three yeast strains together decreased ethanol and biomass production. The best ethanol production was 15.5% from a mix of C.kefyr and S. cerevisiae in a bioreactor over 48 hours.
