Vegetation coverage key to reducing soil and nutrient loss in rainfall.
Soil erosion and nutrient loss can harm water bodies. Researchers studied how rainfall and vegetation affect soil and nutrient loss in Beijing. They found that soil erosion decreased with 20% to 60% vegetation coverage. Nutrient loss was lowest with over 60% coverage. High-intensity rainfall led to more nutrient loss than low-intensity rainfall. Runoff, rainfall intensity, depth, and soil loss were key factors in soil nutrient loss. Vegetation and soil moisture did not affect runoff and soil loss during heavy rainfall. Understanding these factors can help reduce pollution from slopes.
