Protected areas in Visayas face shift to high-intensity farming, threatening crop diversity.
Agricultural practices in protected areas in the Visayas are changing from subsistence to cash-based, leading to more intensive farming with heavy use of chemicals. Different crop production systems were identified, including traditional mosaic and high input vegetables. Crop diversity on farms is generally low, with limited integration of perennial crops. Farm species diversity increases with age and participation in livelihood projects. To improve sustainability, livelihood programs and institutional support should be strengthened in these areas.
