Japanese Firms Dominate China's Top Cities, Reshaping Local Economies
Japanese companies investing in China tend to cluster in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. A study analyzed these clusters, focusing on the types of industries and origins of the companies. The results showed that in Shanghai, companies in the same industry tend to group together strongly, while in Beijing and Guangzhou, this effect is weaker. Shanghai also has a strong trend of companies following each other's lead. Additionally, Shanghai has more companies operating independently, while Beijing and Guangzhou have more joint ventures. Beijing has a higher proportion of service industries, Guangzhou is dominated by manufacturing, and Shanghai focuses on production, trade, and services.
