Ineffective rainfall events fail to improve soil moisture in grasslands.
The study looked at how rainfall affects soil moisture in a grassland area. Rainfall events of less than 7 mm didn't improve soil moisture much. Only rainfall over 55 mm could reach deep into the soil. Soil moisture levels varied at different depths after rainfall, with the surface layer getting wettest first. The amount of moisture added by rain depended on how wet the soil was to begin with, peaking when the soil was 5-12% water. Very dry or saturated soil didn't absorb much water from rain.
