Winter wheat yields increase by 15% with reduced water and nitrogen.
In a study on winter wheat cultivation, researchers in Shaanxi, China tested the effects of water-saving and nitrogen reduction. They found that applying less water during the winter wheat season led to increased yields and significantly reduced the risk of soil nitrate nitrogen leaching. Specifically, in the winter of 2017-2018, the highest yield was achieved with 150 kg/ha of nitrogen, while in 2018-2019, 225 kg/ha of nitrogen resulted in the highest yield. Interestingly, in 2018-2019, using 150 kg/ha of nitrogen not only increased yield but also improved nitrogen use efficiency compared to using 225 kg/ha of nitrogen.
