Landfill gas turned into electricity to power city streetlights.
Municipal solid waste in landfills produces methane gas, a harmful greenhouse gas. Instead of letting it escape into the atmosphere, we can collect it and turn it into energy. A tool called Landgem helps estimate how much methane a landfill emits, which can then be used to generate electricity. A case study in Namibia showed that a power plant could provide energy for 142 streetlights every day from methane gas.
