Plowing upland fields for maize leads to shallower root systems.
Maize roots grow shallower when fields are plowed instead of rotary tilled. Soil hardness and fertilization affect root depth. Plowing leads to 20% shallower roots after the 7th leaf stage. Fertilization doesn't significantly change root depth. Plowing increases root density near the surface compared to rotary tilling. This happens because plowed soil is harder in fields converted from paddy fields.
