Desalination is important in arid places like the UAE. Reverse osmosis (RO) is commonly used but uses a lot of energy. Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) can help reduce this energy load. Different types of MDCs were compared for integration with RO. Key factors like anodic inoculum and feed ratios were optimized. MDCs can significantly cut energy use in RO desalination.
