Extreme Indian Ocean Weather Patterns Trigger Unpredictable Monsoon Rainfall.
The extreme positive Indian Ocean Dipole event in 2019 led to a very wet Indian Summer monsoon season, despite a dry start in June. The strong IOD was linked to increased rainfall over India, especially later in the season. However, warm sea surface temperatures in the central Pacific caused decreased rainfall in June. This study used a model to show how these ocean temperature patterns affected the Indian monsoon rainfall, helping us understand how extreme events impact the seasonal weather patterns in the region.
