The study tested the twin deficit hypothesis in North Macedonia by analyzing the relationship between the budget deficit and the current account deficit. They used data from 2005 to 2017 and found that short-term efforts to improve current account imbalances through fiscal policy are ineffective. However, there is a long-term relationship between the budget deficit and the current account deficit, suggesting the need for policies to reduce the budget deficit and boost exports to improve the country's external position.
