Ancient Chinese settlers thrived on mixed economy in harsh steppe zone.
The study looked at how people in the Northern Yinshan Mountain region of China changed their way of living from hunting and gathering to a mix of farming and herding. They found that people relied on wild resources a lot, but started focusing more on animals over time. Even though they didn't fully settle down, they gathered in bigger groups. The researchers think that the environment made it hard for intensive farming to work well in the area. So, people found a better balance by focusing more on animals for food.
