Forests Crucial in Climate Fight, But Carbon Markets Underutilized
Forests are vital in fighting climate change. The article discusses how global efforts aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It focuses on two main aspects of forests: mitigating (reducing) and adapting to climate change. One way to lessen emissions is through forest projects in carbon markets. However, the number of these projects is low overall. In Turkey, the earnings from voluntary carbon markets are much lower than mandatory markets. The carbon credits traded in Turkey mainly come from renewable energy, not forestry. To improve, Turkey needs to actively participate in negotiations on forest-related mechanisms to combat climate change and make technical and organizational changes.
