Small Ruminant Dairy Sector Holds Key to Stabilizing Global Temperatures
To stabilize global temperatures and combat climate change, researchers studied how the European small ruminant dairy sector affects atmospheric warming using a new measurement called CO2-warming-equivalent emissions (GWP*). They found that from 1990-2018, the dairy sheep sector in Europe offset the warming caused by dairy goat production. Looking ahead, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from dairy sheep and goats could make the industry climatically neutral, with slight reductions needed for sheep and goat GHG emissions, possibly through feed additives. So, overall, the European small ruminant dairy industry, with some changes, could help stabilize global temperatures.
