Grassland degradation hotspots identified in Tibetan Plateau, urgent restoration needed!
Grasslands in the Tibetan Plateau have been suffering from overgrazing and degradation. A study analyzed changes in grassland coverage from 2000 to 2019. They found that 62.12% of grasslands increased in vegetation cover, while 9.54% decreased, mainly near roads, rivers, and lakes. These degraded areas were clustered in six regions. Reduced grazing and increased precipitation helped improve grassland health, but local overgrazing harmed it. To restore the grasslands, the government needs to better support and monitor grazing practices, especially in the degraded areas.
