Extreme weather events reshape Algiers bay beaches, impacting sediment transport.
The study looked at how waves and currents affect sandy beaches in Algiers Bay. They used field measurements and computer models to see how winter and summer weather impacts the coast. In winter, waves from the west create strong currents and move a lot of sand along the shore. In summer, waves from the northeast create rip currents that also move sand. The researchers found that the type of sediment on the beach affects how it moves, with coarse sand moving more cross-shore than along the coast. They also saw that different wave directions lead to the formation of underwater sandbars near the shore.
