New cover crop species in Tennessee boost forage quality and soil health.
Cover crops can benefit corn and soybean production, but not all species are suitable for Tennessee. Researchers compared 16 cover crop species in two crop rotations and found that cereals were best for soybean/corn rotation. All species had good forage quality, with biomass ranging from 1936 to 3880 kg ha-1. Dual-use cover cropping provided high-quality forage without harming soil or cash crop yields.
