New research reveals diverse salt-loving microbes thriving in extreme environments!
Halophilic archaea, salt-loving microorganisms, thrive in salty environments like oceans and salt flats. They need high levels of salt to grow and stay stable. These archaea are found in various salty places around the world, from tropical to polar regions. Recent technology allows us to study them better by analyzing their DNA. So far, scientists have identified 275 different species of halophilic archaea, with half coming from marine environments and the other half from inland salt areas. Some types, like nanohaloarchaea, are still not fully understood. Cultivating these archaea in labs is slow and challenging, but it helps us learn more about them.
