The EU Emerges as a Full-Fledged European Democracy Post-Lisbon
"The Rise of European Democracy" introduces a new theory called Theory of Democratic Integration and a model called Maastrichtian Model of Transnational Governance to understand the EU. The paper suggests that when democratic states share sovereignty to achieve common goals, the resulting organization must also be democratic. The EU has evolved from the ECSC in 1951 to the creation of the EU in 1992 and is now considered a European democracy after the 2019 EP-elections. This means the EU is now defined as a Union of States and Citizens working as a European democracy.
