Global drylands becoming drier as evaporation outpaces precipitation.
Drylands around the world are changing due to a combination of less rainfall and increased evaporation caused by higher temperatures. While most dry areas are mainly affected by lack of rain, some regions in Europe and East Asia are more influenced by evaporation. Over the past century, the total dryland area has actually increased, with evaporation playing a bigger role in making these areas drier than rainfall. This shift happened in 1966, leading to a reversal in the trend of dryness in these regions.
