Dams removals could increase sediment in Hudson River estuary
The article examines the potential impact of sediment releases from dam removals on the Hudson River estuary. By studying sediment loads from various sources and conducting surveys in subwatersheds, researchers estimated that the total mass of impounded sediment in the Lower Hudson watershed is about 4.9 million tons. This amount is equivalent to around 4 years of the annual sediment supply to the estuary. The study found that while dam removals may increase suspended sediment near the source during discharge events, the overall effect on sediment in the estuary is minimal. Fine-grained sediment tends to deposit broadly along the estuary, while coarser sediment deposits closer to the source.
