Earthworms Turn Agrowaste into Biofertilizer, Boosting Organic Farming in Deserts
Researchers in tropical India studied how earthworms can turn cumin straw and cow dung into organic fertilizer. They used two types of earthworms, Eisenia fetida and Perionyx sansibaricus, to break down the waste. The study found that E. fetida was better at converting the waste compared to P. sansibaricus. The vermicompost produced had good levels of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which can help improve organic farming in the Thar Desert region. Both types of earthworms can be used to manage organic waste effectively in desert areas.
