Developing nations hold key to climate change future
This article discusses how developing countries need to be part of international efforts to fight climate change effectively. During the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol, developing nations didn't have to reduce their emissions, and the United States chose not to participate. If the Kyoto Protocol is to be successful in the future, negotiations starting in 2005 will be crucial. The disagreements between developing countries, the U.S., and Europe need to be resolved by considering the interests of developing nations and finding a fair balance on issues of fairness. The paper looks at the politics and economics of how developing countries could be more involved in global climate policies, like setting emission goals, using the Clean Development Mechanism, and adapting to climate changes.
