US City Price Levels Converge Slowly, Impacting Cost of Living
Price levels among major U.S. cities tend to balance out very slowly over time. A study of 19 cities from 1918 to 1995 shows that it takes about nine years for prices to even out. This slow convergence is due to factors like transportation costs, how quickly cities adjust to changes, and the prices of goods that aren't traded between cities.
