Smallholder farmers struggle to transition from subsistence to commercial farming
The study looked at how small farmers in Ethiopia make decisions about what to grow and sell. They found that the factors influencing what farmers grow are different from what influences whether they sell their crops. However, when farmers focus on growing crops for the market, they are more likely to sell their produce. This means that helping farmers understand market demands can lead to increased sales, but just encouraging them to sell their crops may not necessarily lead to better market-focused farming practices.
