Stronger labor protections lead to lower unemployment rates, study finds.
The study looked at how different labor market rules affect unemployment rates in 19 countries from 1960 to 2000. They found that stricter job protection, higher taxes on wages, and better unemployment benefits tend to increase unemployment. On the other hand, having wage negotiations done centrally can decrease unemployment. The impact of these rules varies between countries.
