Government social security programs reduce private transfers among elderly in Taiwan.
The study looked at how public money given to elderly people in Taiwan affected the money their adult children gave them. By using a special method to analyze the data, the researchers found that when the government gave more money to the elderly, their adult children gave them less money. This shows that public money can sometimes replace private money given by family members.
