Product differentiation hinders collusion in costly coordination scenarios, study finds.
Increased product differentiation makes it harder to maintain collusion when it's costly to coordinate. This is true for many models of competition between different products. Previous research suggested that more differentiation could help collusion, but this new study shows that's not the case when coordination is difficult. In real life, collusion tends to happen more among similar companies.
