Agricultural trade liberalization may harm developing countries, eroding benefits and increasing obstacles.
Agricultural trade liberalization may not benefit all developing countries equally. Some countries could actually be worse off. Tariff issues are the focus of current trade talks, but other barriers like standards set by private companies are a bigger problem for some countries. The preferences these countries have in European and North American markets could be eroded by multilateral trade agreements. Sub-Saharan African and least developed countries face challenges that won't be solved by current trade negotiations. These countries might even fall further behind more advanced developing nations. While global trade liberalization is important, specific rules and actions are needed to help the poorest countries compete.
