The researchers randomly assigned subsidies to traders and compared prices of subsidized and unsubsidized crops to understand market competition. They found that the Sierra Leone cocoa industry has a competitive trading sector with a larger market size than just the village. This study offers a new method to analyze market structure at the individual level when group randomization is not possible.
