New immigrants impact local job opportunities for less-skilled natives.
The article examines how the arrival of new immigrants affects the job opportunities of native workers and older immigrants in the United States. By analyzing data from the 1990 Census, the researchers found that new immigrants tend to be concentrated in lower-skilled jobs. Despite this, the study shows that the presence of new immigrants does not significantly impact the decisions of native workers to move to different cities. However, the increase in specific skill groups due to immigration leads to slight decreases in employment rates for natives and earlier immigrants in the same skill group. Overall, the study suggests that the effects of large numbers of new immigrants on the job market for less-skilled workers are relatively small.
