Maize farmers in Uganda face economic losses due to input choices.
The study looked at how using better seeds and fertilizers affects maize farming in Uganda. They found that using improved inputs increased crop yield, but didn't always lead to more profit. Farmers who used recycled improved seeds without fertilizer got the highest profit. Overall, farmers actually lost money when considering the cost of their own land and labor. The study suggested that farming maize on 2-3 hectares of land was most profitable, while farming less or more led to losses. In 2005/06, and possibly still today, growing maize in Uganda may not be very profitable beyond providing food for households.
