New chickpea hybrids show 25% increase in yield, promising future food security.
The researchers studied how combining different chickpea plants can lead to better yields. They crossed four lines with six male parents to create 24 hybrids, which were then tested alongside a standard variety. The hybrid PDKV Kanchan x GJG-0814 showed the highest yield, with a 15.45% increase over the standard variety. Another hybrid, Phule Vikram x C-1821, also had a high yield, with a 10.65% increase over the standard variety. This shows that combining different chickpea plants can result in better yields, known as heterosis.
