Offshore oil and gas production in Mexico emits significantly more methane.
Methane emissions from oil and gas production in Mexico were studied using aircraft and satellite data. Offshore emissions were much lower than estimated, while onshore emissions were significantly higher. A gas processing complex onshore was found to be a major emitter due to inefficient flaring. The satellite data indicated even higher emissions than the aircraft data. The current inventory of emissions in Mexico is likely inaccurate due to the use of generic emission factors. This study emphasizes the need for specific, local data to effectively reduce emissions from oil and gas production in Mexico.
