Japanese agricultural policies have led to lower world rice prices and caused distortions in Japan's economy, costing consumers and taxpayers $1.73 for every dollar of support to farmers. Eliminating this support could reduce agricultural incomes in Japan, but most farmers wouldn't be significantly affected since agriculture contributes less than 8% of total household incomes for nearly 70% of farmers.
