Unemployment spikes due to firms ignoring general equilibrium effects in competition.
Firms that don't consider how their decisions affect the whole economy can lead to higher unemployment. In a study using a model where firms compete and wages are fixed, it was found that if firms only focus on their own sector, unemployment stays high until they adjust to the bigger picture. But if workers can easily switch between industries, unemployment is lower when firms think about the whole economy from the start.
