Government subsidies for green goods like renewable energy are more popular globally than carbon taxes. These subsidies can encourage the production and use of environmentally friendly technologies. The World Trade Organization regulates these subsidies, but there are no exceptions for issues like climate change. A new study shows that offering subsidies for green goods can benefit both producer countries and global welfare. Optimal subsidies for renewable energy may be higher than currently offered.
