Spain's Decarbonization Efforts Outpace EU, but Challenges Remain in Achieving Emissions Targets
Spain is making progress towards a cleaner, more energy-efficient economy compared to the EU28. This is due to changes in the economy towards less energy-intensive sectors and the use of cleaner energy sources. However, Spain still needs to reduce emissions from before the 2007 crisis. The country is improving its technical energy efficiency faster than the EU28, but inefficient energy equipment is holding back progress. The energy infrastructure in Spain is not being used efficiently, which could hinder meeting emission and energy consumption goals. The study used a method called IO-LMDI to analyze energy use and emissions in different sectors, considering various factors that affect energy efficiency.
